The temporary bridge, with a total weight of 80 tonnes, was built in small sections and lifted into place using a 500-tonne mobile crane in the early hours of Sunday 9 December.
The lifting operation required the closure of this normally very busy stretch of road and therefore careful planning was needed to avoid unforeseen problems that might lead to unnecessarily long closure of the road.
The Norwegian Public Roads Administration had originally planned to lift the bridge into place using two 300-tonne cranes, but it soon became clear that there was nowhere suitable to set up two large cranes in the narrow cutting.
Nordic Crane therefore came up with an alternative solution, which involved using a 500-tonne mobile crane with a specially developed 18 m long lifting beam to perform the operation. Nordic Crane also assisted the Norwegian Public Roads Administration with the design, calculation and delivery of custom-made lifting equipment to grab the bridge.
